Seeking Town Board member

The Town of Ulysses currently has a vacancy on the Town Board. As per Town Law section 64-5, the Town Board may appoint a resident of the town who is 18 or older to fill a vacancy on the board. The appointment will be through December 31, 2020. The appointee may choose to run in a special election for that seat to be held on November 3, 2020 to fulfill the remainder of the term (which expires on December 31, 2021).  
 
DESCRIPTION:
Members of the Town Board constitute the legislative governing body of Ulysses. They are responsible for establishing and overseeing the policies, financial practices, and ethical framework of the town government. 
 
Town Board members convene on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays at 7pm for regular meetings and hold special meetings when necessary.  Preparation for regular meetings takes approximately 1-2 hours, although variations in material may mean more or less time.  The overall time commitment can vary based on the availability and interest of the Town Board member. 
 
Town Board members are encouraged to undertake special projects with the approval of the Town Board, and are required to serve as a non-voting liaison on one or more town committees and/or external groups. 
 
Town Boards are responsible for:
  • Adopting an annual budget; 
  • Setting the salaries of officers and other employees;
  • Establishing the rules governing the procedures of the board;
  • Overseeing improvements in town infrastructure, such as road and bridges repairs;
  • Conducting audits to insure the proper use of town funds;  
  • Overseeing the personnel who work for the Town (excluding the Highway Department); 
  • Supporting or pursuing initiatives for the improvement of the health, safety, or well-being of the general public (water districts, fire protection districts, watersheds, zoning, etc.);
  • Undertaking other duties as required by law or commitment.
